Teenage Drug Abuse

In today’s world, more and more teenagers are becoming addicted to drugs. There is a wide variety of substances that are being abused by teenagers. Some of the most frequent drug abuses include: tobacco products, depressants, cannabinoids, narcotics, and cold medication. There are a lot of stages of substance abuse, ending with the difficulty of managing a person’s life as a result of their drug problem. People, who begin using narcotics as teens, are at greater chance of becoming addicted than an adult. An adult’s brain is fully developed in comparisons to a teen’s brain.

There are a lot of side effects when a teen has a drug problem. Any illegal substance will lower a teen’s ability to pay attention. Substance abuse also masks an emotional problem or problems that a teen has. Emotional problems include depression, mood swings, and anxiety. Any of those problems can result in death by homicide or suicide. The younger a person is on substance use, is more likely to develop an addiction.

There are a total of 5 stages of substance use. The first stage is getting access to illegal substances. This stage will make a teen vulnerable and more open to using narcotics. The second stage is experimenting or occasional use of narcotics. This is the stage when a teen is using parties or special events. The third stage of substance usage is the use of these substances on a regular basis and increasing the frequency of using one or more drugs. During this stage, the teen will try and steal, drug dealing or buying to get the narcotics he is using. When a teen is in the fourth stage of substance abuse, he established a regular usage, he had become preoccupied with getting high, and he developed major problems in his education, social, or family life. The fifth and most serious stage is when a teen says that he is feeling “normal” when they are high. This stage is the most serious because the teen will try and steal, drug deal, engaging in unprotected sex or driving while intoxicated.

Substance abuse in teens is a great problem in today’s society. In this generation, young kids are maturing faster and faster. They are more curious in trying new things. Also a young person may be influenced by his peers to try narcotics. That is why is good to monitor young children and make sure that the child lives and grows in a good and safe environment.
